MAY 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Spring certainly arrived early in Minnesota this year – but there is still something wonderful about May as my garden is awash in color and scents, chalk drawings from neighborhood kids decorate sidewalks and we finally put the canoe out on the St. Croix River. This month at TPT, we turn our attention to new programs that match the vibrancy of the season. Premiering this month is a new season of fan-favorite Relish , hosted by the always delightful Chef Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen and the soon-to-open Vinai. Chef Vang serves as the ultimate guide for viewers who seek to learn about, appreciate and understand diverse cultures through the power of epicurious storytelling. He is also an expert at drawing out personal anecdotes from area chefs as they prepare and share ingredients and dishes representing their own cultures. Relish is truly a feast for the senses! Six new episodes begin streaming May 10 on the PBS App and TPT.org/relish , and you can learn more about Chef Vang on pages 6 & 7. Relish is made possible by Minnesota's Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund. May also marks the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we will showcase the one-and-only George Takei in the new film To Be Takei . The documentary chronicles the actor’s journey from his childhood in a World War II Japanese internment camp in California to the helm of the Starship Enterprise on "Star Trek," and along the way, becoming a cultural icon who brings wit to his millions of social media fans. The film airs on Tuesday, May 28 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. Earlier in the month, drama fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a new limited series from Masterpiece . MaryLand follows the story of two estranged sisters who reunite in the wake of their mother’s sudden death and the discovery that she lived a secret double life on the Isle of Man. The series premieres on Sunday, May 5 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2.

Feast Your Senses on a New Streaming Season of Relish The show’s host, Chef Yia Vang, explains the powerful synergy between food, storytelling and human connection.

We caught up with Chef Vang to get the inside scoop on his experiences hosting this new expression of Relish .

Q: Relish is back! How do you describe this show to people?

Yia Vang : Relish to me is the digging in of stories that start from food. As humans, we search for restoration and to be restored, and that's Relish . It's a sense of belonging; all of us asking the question, “Where and how do I belong?” This season, we're spending more time in each episode digging deeper into the relationships and the stories.

Q: What was your favorite part of making these new episodes?

The Twin Cities PBS original series Relish returns with a bold new take and a longer format that features more local chefs, more music and more flavor. Hosted by contagiously enthusiastic Chef Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen and Vinai (opening later this spring), Relish delves into the rich tapestry of food traditions, history, cultural influences, and modern expressions of taste and flavor, catering to the epicurious and those eager to explore new culinary horizons in Minnesota. Starting May 10, all six new episodes will be available to stream for free on the PBS App ahead of the broadcast premiere later this fall. Apart from transforming Hmong classic dishes into modern marvels, Chef Vang believes that food is rooted in the power of narrative, making him the perfect host to draw out the intimate stories that connect other local chefs’ cuisine to their cultural roots. This season, we venture with him as he explores the veritable globe of the Minnesota food scene, and meets luminaries such as Sean Sherman of Owamni, John Ng of Zen Box Izakaya, Milissa Silva of El Burrito Mercado, and Aubrey and Kale Walch of The Herbivorous Butcher, among many others.

Yia Vang : During interviewing, cooking and understanding the food and the stories behind it, I have these light-bulb moments of connection. When we were at Olsen’s Fish Co., learning about lutefisk and talking about Norway, our photographer, who is from Nigeria, starts talking about the dried cod fish he ate during childhood. The Olsens said they get a lot of it and that East African folks request it. It was this moment of connection, where lutefisk is a global thing. Q: Olsen Fish Co. also sells the often-contentious fish made into lutefisk. What surprised you about lutefisk? Yia Vang : What I learned is, if you talk to a Norwegian, they will turn their nose at lutefisk and say, “Why are you eating that?” For them, it was a symbol of the old days. This also happens with some Hmong dishes. I firmly believe that, as humans, we were created for community, like our soul desires it. I think for young people who are like, “Lutefisk! No!,” you’ve got to get over it and see what's deeper.

MAY 2024

Q: What kind of reception have you gotten for Relish and your role as the host of the show?

That’s your curiosity. What I loved in that lutefisk episode is, once a year, this community comes out and gets to be around each other. It's a sense of belonging. Q: In one new episode, you visit Kramarczuk’s Sausage in Northeast Minneapolis. What was special about meeting this team and learning their story? Yia Vang : I never thought in my lifetime I could show my dad that what he used to do in the mountains of Laos is similar to another refugee family we've teamed up with for Relish [the Kramarczuks are from Poland]. My dad shared later that, while in the refugee camp in Vietnam, he worked in the butcher section. I had never understood why I was so drawn to butchery as a kid growing up. So, it comes full circle where I'm discovering stuff about my own family.

Yia Vang : What I love is bumping into some of these fans of Relish . One of the ladies, she grabbed my arm and she said, “I love the show so much. It's taught me so much and I'm in my 70s.” It's that restoration thing, right? It's still changing hearts and minds. I have a stack of letters from a school out in Saint Louis Park. They watched a bunch of the Relish shows and then they sent me these letters as part of their assignment. One of them was like, “Hey, I'm Asian, but I'm adopted into a white family, and I don't know where I belong. But when I watch these shows, I feel a sense inside of me.” And so that's why for me, this is the passion for me. This is that part where it's like, this is so incredible what we get to do.

Q: What are the similarities between being a chef and being a show host?

Q: Did you have any new food items or dishes that surprised you?

Yia Vang : Working in restaurants, especially cooking, you need to depend on and trust each other, and be three steps ahead. The moment you want to be a hero and be a lone wolf, you will fail, and the system will crash. Being a host, you must build trust with people you’re interviewing because you're going into their lives. The way that a host overlaps with being a chef is saying, “Hey, I’ve got to be two steps ahead, three steps ahead, and I’ve got to be very curious.” Andrew Zimmern told me, “You are the avatar, and the viewers are going to see through your eyes.”

Yia Vang : Working with Kale and Aubry Walsh from The Herbivorous Butcher [a vegan butcher], I learned a lot about Guam and the flavors they grew up with. We now use some of these flavors at Union Hmong Kitchen in a delicious mushroom broth and omelet.

Q: Why is Relish a meaningful show for you to be part of?

Yia Vang : It's so important for kids watching Relish that they see people who look like them. Growing up, I never saw anybody that looked like me on TV. One of the biggest compliments I received was from a young mom who said to me, “Hey, this is my son Max, a Hmong kid. He's 7 and he loves to cook, and he watches all your shows.” The mom then whispers in my ear, “It’s so good for my son to see someone that looks like him that's doing this.”

Guisado: Pork and Cactus in Salsa Recipe by: El Burrito Mercado

Ingredients 2 lb pork butt cut into 1/2” cubes 5-6 tomatillo, remove husks and wash

2 Roma tomato 1/4 white onion 4 garlic cloves 3 jalapeño peppers or 2 serrano peppers (choose your spiciness) 2 tsp oregano 2 tsp salt 2 tsp pepper 1 Tbsp chicken bouillon Cooking oil 1 cup water 1 lb cleaned (spikes removed) fresh cactus, chopped into thin 1” slices (optional: use cactus in a jar) Instructions 1. Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a pot over medium heat, add the cubed pork butt. 2. Season with salt & black pepper, cover pot and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stir occasionally until golden brown. 3. Prepare the cactus: Carefully remove the spikes from the cactus pad with a sharp knife or peeler, rinse, then slice into thin small pieces, bite size or about 1 inch long. Run it under water again to make sure all of the slivers are off. Add it to the meat and cover. Stir occasionally, until the fresh cactus is cooked (it will release the mucilage (slimy gooey clear liquid). It is fully cooked when it changes color and no more goo is present. About 7 minutes. (If you prefer to use the jarred cactus, drain the juice and goo, rinse it well with water in a strainer, then add it when you add the sauce). 4. Make the sauce: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a medium fry pan. Once hot, add the tomatillo, fresh tomato and two garlic cloves. Cook until charred. As soon as the garlic is toasted, remove it and place it in the blender. Continue to cook the tomatillo and tomato until they are completely charred on all sides. Then, using tongs, add to the blender. In the blender, also add the water, onion, oregano and bouillon blend until desired consistency. 5. Pour the sauce over the cactus and meat. Simmer on low for about five minutes.

6. Serve with eggs, rice, potatoes, or beans. Enjoy!

Minnesota Comedian Ali Sultan Jokes Straight from the Heart Appearing in a new PBS series Roots of Comedy , the performer discusses his influences and what he gleans from a life on the road.

What made you decide to be open about your experiences as part of your comedy routine? Comedy helps me express and offload heavy feelings. I generally just talk about thoughts and feelings that resonate. Jokes are just marking chapters of my life, some that have ended and some ongoing. I don’t think too much past self-expression and what makes me laugh. Mental health is an ongoing theme in my life, and that’s why I talk about it. Are there any stories that have really stuck with you throughout your time on the road? Every time I do shows, there is something interesting I learn about people or myself. You really learn about people in comedy. Moments repeat themselves, too. My favorite thing is when people continue to support me like a family member. I have honorary moms, dads and brothers. Fans have invited me to their homes, businesses and even to two weddings. How have your family and relationships shaped you and your work? My mom is a huge inspiration for me. Without her, I wouldn’t be here. My sisters are wonderful and supportive. My girlfriend is my rock. My friends are inspiring and kind. Life is about relationships. I am happy to be surrounded by many supportive people. I thank them all. Why not catch his contagious laughter in person? You’ll be able to see him perform, along with some of his friends in humor, at the TPT Roots of Comedy event on May 29 at Sisyphus Brewing . Find out more at TPT.org/events .

On stage, with a microphone in hand and heart on his sleeve, comedian Ali Sultan tells the stories from the chapters of his life—discussing themes of race, family and mental health. Ali immigrated to the U.S. from Yemen at age 15 and soon discovered the thrill of stand-up comedy. For over a decade now, he has been touring across the nation, leaving a trail of laughter and thoughtful introspection in his wake. Drawing from real-life experiences, Ali’s comedy is part of a new era in stand-up that is inclusive, welcoming and yet unflinching. We had the chance to get to know Ali as part of the upcoming premiere of the PBS series Roots of Comedy , which debuts on the PBS App on May 24 and hits the broadcast schedule in June.

How do you typically introduce yourself?

I am a stand-up comedian, immigrant and proud father of two cats. I have been doing stand-up for 13 years and I still love it very much. I am inspired by the creative people I have met in Minneapolis, New York City and on the road. I enjoy living life intentionally and being spiritual.

Next Avenue’s Advocates for Aging

This year, for the first time, Next Avenue partnered with the American Society on Aging (ASA) to select eight Advocates for Aging.

Formerly known as Influencers in Aging, the new initiative emphasizes the forward-thinking work of individuals in areas such as caregiving, employment, public policy, perceptions of aging, longevity and health.

The 2024 Advocates for Aging are Judy Woodruff, Bill McKibben, Carl Honoré, Mona Mourshed, Fernando Torres-Gil, Jan Golden, DeLon Canterbury and Rosanne Corcoran.

Judy Woodruff: Seeking Solutions in a Divided America By Sabrina Crews

Her itinerary includes Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and the South. She'll delve into faith and religion, immigration, gun control, what's on the minds of Republicans and Democrats as they confront their national conventions, and even how politics affects modern dating. Additionally, Woodruff — whose son Jeffrey was born with spina bifida — hopes to spend more time covering disability issues with the NewsHour series “Disability Reframed.”

When PBS NewsHour's Judy Woodruff announced over a year ago that she planned to pause her anchoring duties to travel the country as a reporter, she knew the move might be misconstrued. "I wanted to make it clear that I wasn't stepping off the edge of the earth," she laughs. "A lot of people assume when you make a change like that, you're ending your career." If anything, Woodruff's work has only intensified since. So far, she's visited 16 states and produced 27 stories, including a one-hour primetime special for her NewsHour series “America at a Crossroads." Convinced that America's fractured political climate is better understood outside of Washington, Woodruff aims to meet with and listen to as many people as possible about the state of our country. "As a political reporter, I have never seen us this divided," Woodruff, 77, tells Next Avenue. "And the answers are even more complex and multi-layered than we knew."

"As a political reporter, I have never seen us this divided."

Though she planned to switch to reporting for "a couple of years, at least," actually doing it, Woodruff says, felt emotional. "When you add it all up, I've been at NewsHour for twenty- seven years," she explains. "In my eleven years of anchoring, there was an essential connection between me, the audience and the program. It was in my DNA."

Dementia Caregiving in Asian Communities By Sophie Okolo

In the United States, Asian Americans represent more than 30 nationalities and ethnic groups, but they are typically categorized as Asian or AAPIs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) for reporting. AAPIs are among the fastest-growing population of older Americans in the United States. They come from the five largest ethnic groups: Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Indian and Korean. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Asian Americans 65 years or older account for 8.4% of Alzheimer's cases and other dementias (ADRD), despite being less than 6% of the nation's population. Exploring the positive aspects of caregiving in the context of Asian communities is critical to developing a more robust understanding of dementia caregivers within this population. According to research published in BMC Geriatrics, positive aspects of caregiving are significant coping resources for informal caregivers of people with dementia (PWD). The study revealed three major themes: positive aspects within the self, positive aspects between caregiver and PWD, and positive aspects between the caregiver and others.

"In many Asian cultures, filial piety is considered a moral duty and a way to show gratitude and respect for the sacrifices and contributions made by parents and elders. As a result, adult children in Asian families often prioritize caregiving for their aging parents and grandparents." One thing that people should know about caregiving in the Asian community is the importance of cultural competency and understanding, said Ahuja. "Caregiving practices and attitudes toward aging, illness and end-of-life care vary widely across Asian cultures. Caregivers and health care providers need to be sensitive to these differences,” Ahuja added. By challenging bias, health care can improve cultural competence, empathy and patient outcomes. Consequently, equipping family members to provide high-quality care will involve increasing cultural-specific aspects of caregiving.

"Exploring the positive aspects of caregiving in Asian communities is critical to developing a more robust understanding of dementia caregivers."

One thing that is unique to caregiving in the Asian community is the cultural emphasis on filial piety, which is a concept that emphasizes the importance of respecting and caring for one's elders, said Rajiv Ahuja, an associate director at the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging.
